About Just Peace

JUST PEACE
People for Peace through Justice

In the aftermath of the terrorist attack on the United States, the world political climate became very volatile and uncertain.
Of particular concern to an increasing number of ordinary people in Australia and around the world is the unilateral and untrammelled actions by the US to use its military might to impose its views and authority on the nations of the world, regardless of the right of other states to non-interference in their systems of government and society.
The so-called “war on terror” is a vengeful response that shows no recognition or understanding of the fundamental causes of terrorism and how it may be prevented in the long term with minimal suffering and conflict.
Our Group was formed in response to these concerns, and is composed of people with many views and experience of involvement in the peace and anti-war movement.  These people have a desire to contribute their time and energy to an organisation committed to the aims set out below.  We invite you to join us, and contribute your ideas, energy and enthusiasm!

Our General Aims are:
raise awareness about the causes of conflict on a local, national and international level;
promote and support alternative solutions to war between and within States; and
work for a socially just and peaceful world.

Our Specific Objectives are to mobilise people to
change government policy in relation to:
§ internal security legislation and the rights of people to free expression and to peacefully protest;
§ the involvement of Australian personnel in external wars and conflicts;
§ economic and social legislation that impoverishes and alienates people, and that produces the circumstances in which war and conflict are created;
broaden public discussion and analysis of the causes of war and injustice, including:
§ the definition of and reasons for terrorism; and
§ the social, political and economic effects of “western foreign policy”;
propose alternative solutions that lead to a more peaceful and socially just world, including:
§ alternative relations between “north” and “south”; and
§ alternative means of resolving conflict.

Our proposed activities & methods will include
networking with other Groups having similar aims and objectives;
lobbying Governments and other influential institutions;
raising public awareness through various means, such as speakers’ forums, public meetings and conferences, dissemination of literature, organising cultural events;
supporting actions and activities organised by other groups

Current Specific Actions & Campaigns we propose are:
the threats made by the US in relation to Iran, Iraq and North Korea;
the ongoing plight of the Palestinian people in their struggle for land and justice;
the massive increase in the US military budget, and the increasing expenditure on nuclear war fighting capability;
proposed new draconian Australian security legislation
